This was the waist-high pile of interiors magazines that I decided to throw out yesterday.
I amassed them over the past eight years or thereabouts. I was fanatical about them at one time.
But then I discovered the internet, and blogs, and digital magazines. And I haven’t looked at them much in ages.
They were taking up valuable space in the spare room, so it was time for them to go.
This is our spare room at the moment:
It is a bit of a mish-mash space really. It acts as office, cushion storage area and occasional guest room.
Most of the space is taken up by two single beds pushed together. We got them when my sis came to stay.
They are very comfy, but rarely required. They’re just not earning their keep.
I have a Grand Plan: to ebay the beds, paint the floor, fill the cracks in the badly-plastered walls, put in some suitable storage and a sewing table and… move modflowers’ operations upstairs to a proper dedicated sewing space.
The room below is where I sew at the moment. It’s looking unusually spick and span here I might add (this photo was taken a while ago and I’d obviously just had a major tidy up).
I am excited – and not a little daunted – by the prospect of The Grand Plan.
But sewing is starting to impinge on our living space, which is not relaxing for anyone.
The pointing out of this fact is key to selling The Grand Plan to my other half; a necessary task, but one to be approached with a little caution and a lot of gumption.
Possibly after a spot of Valentines Day softening-up.
I’ll let you know how I get on.
Wish me luck! 😉
Good luck! Both your spaces look great and it would be fab to have another living space freed up downstairs? I would give anything to have a dedicated sewing room 🙂
Your home is so gorgeous! But I think you are right about moving to a dedicated space for sewing. And well done for getting rid of the magazines. I’ve not completely purged the house from them, but I haven’t bought a single one for about 2 years. x
I’m thinking of cancelling my subscription too!
:0) I love your grand plan……I also love your home!
Good luck. X
Thanks Amanda! Love your paper chains! We made some last Christmas, from white paper. The living room looked fab festooned with them.
we did exactly the same!
our old double bed guest room became my sewing room a few years ago….I did it gradually then exclaimed….I have a sewing room! Now just about ready for another refurb..onwards and upwards..whatever did you do with those mags…??
The magazines went into the recycle bin for collection!
P.S. I use old magazines to make paper chains which come out for parties and Christmas……the colourful pages look great cut in strips with pinking shears. Here’s an example of one of mine last Christmas http://twitter.com/BlossomFair/status/277377161969672192/photo/1

You have inspired me to remove the magazines towers from my home too … and I have just started the same process … we have a spare bedroom too which had a huge bed in it which we had inherited with our last house … it has been dismantled and will be sold to help fund a crafty space for me … I am saving my pennies so that I can have a iittle space of my own … your house is beautiful … Bee xx
Thanks Bee! We will have to compare sewing spaces – I’m not a quick worker and fully expect my Grand Plan will take a while to come to fruition.
I thought it was just me with a bad magazine habit. I’m trying to plough through my piles and then hand them over to my mum and sister. Love your habitat light by the way, I ordered one and they had a production problem and it never arrived, boo hoo.
Ah, that’s a shame! I’m sure I’ve seen a ceramic version of the same shade from a different shop, but I can’t remember which one…
I love your colour coded bookcase, your sewing room makes me feel very messy though.
Perhaps I should post another picture of it in it’s more usual state, to make you feel better! 🙂
I want to live in your house! I love my crudy (craft room/study) indecently, even though I have to share it with the boys. getting rid of the bed and using the space everyday was the best thing we did. It is the smallest room (apart from the loo) but one of the most used.
I love the term “crudy”! How fab!
Good luck! I love the sound of your Grand Plan.
We’ve recently worked out that 2 guest rooms is a bit of a waste of space, so we’ll probably do a bedroom jiggle and I’ll get a big sunny craft / sitting room Time will tell.
Sounds good! Wish mine was big and sunny, but you can’t have everything! One good thing is the room is warm as it has central heating pipes running under the floorboards, so at least I’ll be a bit more inclined to sew in winter.
A very fine plan indeed – I’m all for making the most of your space! We are about to do something similar – we have a spare room with a guest bed which is hardly used. So the bed is being ditched and the room turned into a “man cave” for my husband and I get the study all to myself with space to get my sewing machine out and all my crafty stuff (and a few Blythes). Yay 🙂
Fab! Sounds like an even grander plan than mine! Love the idea of a man cave – as long as I never have to set foot in it! 😉
the grand plan sounds like a good one. I love your white floor and stacks of books! Heather x
I love how you’ve organised your books all colour co-ordinated, I may have to steal that idea 🙂 my craft room/workspace is also my bedroom that I share with my boyfriend in our little flat – it can get very frustrating, I wish I had my own space. goodluck with your grand plan! <3
