I love discovering new artists and designers.
In fact, I spent a lovely day yesterday doing exactly that, at Wirksworth Festival.
We always go to the arts trail, held on the first weekend of the festival, every year. And every year the weather is lovely, the art is exciting and fun, and the day is fantastically enjoyable.
But recently I discovered an amazingly talented designer from the past.
Tammis Keefe was born Margaret Thomas Keefe in 1913 in the USA.
She became one of the first women designers to achieve name recognition, producing hundreds of designs for furnishing fabrics, handkerchiefs and dishtowels.
Her designs are quirky, colourful and, I think, way ahead of their time.
And I love them. ♥
I think my mother had a handkerchief of hers when I was a child – I think I remember the pink and grey and butterflies. Amazing how ephemera like that stick in your mind!
Pity you don’t still have it Kate!
I remember my mum having an orange Cathrineholm lotus bowl and matching pan. I never liked them growing up and my sister took the bowl when we cleared the house. Astonishing how much money they fetch nowadays!
