bad hair day

modflowers: making doll hairWe all have them, don’t we.

Bad hair days.

Well, it turns out that dolls are no exception.

I know the saying goes “a bad workman blames his tools” but it would, I think, have helped if I’d had the correct needle for the job.

As it was, I had to choose between a knitters’ needle (big eye, blunt end) or a sewing needle (small eye, sharp end).

The former made for easy threading, followed by hours of stabbing and wiggling, trying to pierce the reluctant cotton of the doll’s head.

The latter allowed for easy sewing – preceded by hours of trying to thread too-thick wool through a too-narrow needle.

Especially given that that red wool did not want to play nicely.

It shredded. It tangled. It frayed.

It shed red fibres everywhere.

And when I came back, it seemed, thankfully, to get a bit easier.

And so did Redhead, who ended up with a finished barnet by the end of the afternoon after all.

Although her stylist might, if tempted to make another redhead. ♥

  1. I was mooching through my favourite sewing shop today and saw a packet of two doll needles for $8.95. I thought of you…. I should have bought them, by the sound of it! I could mail them to you in a toothbrush tube to prevent the Royal Mail doing its stuff again!

    • It’s ok – the seller I bought them from has accepted photographs of their damaged condition and is sending me replacements. Thanks for thinking of me though! It’s just annoying to have such a long delay, but there’s no choice when there is no decent supplier locally.

  2. Have you tried those curved needles for your dolls hair (I’m not sure of their correct name). They are great for manoeuvring around the shape of the dolls head.

    • I do have one of those Jodie, but I found it really difficult to get the needle to come up exactly where I wanted it to, because of the curve.

  3. I love your dolls! I know I just have to sit back and enjoy them…you do all the hard work! So glad you are posting about them..I think they are wonderful!!
