christmas in july

modflowers: christmas in julyChristmas in July is not an idea I am on board with.

I am not even a lover of autumn.

The Americans have the right idea, calling it fall. The season certainly falls out of favour with me.

Not for me the joys of kicking through fallen leaves (too many experiences of concealed dog muck!) or the thrill of cold mornings and dark evenings.

No, I am a summer lover. Even now, when I suffer from the heat rather than bask in it as I did in my youth, give me a warm sunny day with the prospect of more of the same to come, rather than a chilly one with the promise of winter around the corner.

Don’t even get me started on how much I hate winter. Aching bones, slippery pathways, getting out of bed in the freezing cold…nah, you can keep it, thanks.

One of the television channels is currently screening a season of festive movies they’re calling “Christmas in July”.

Christmas in July? I am more than happy to wait until the real thing comes around.

modflowers: christmas in julySo it is with something approaching dread that I have to start thinking about – sshh, whisper it – Christmas, before school has even broken up.

But think about it I must, at least if I am to stand any chance of being even halfway ready for the one time of year when people throw caution to the wind to buy frivolous stuff, like the frivolous stuff I make.

And it’s not only a question of thinking about it either. Oh no. Action is required.

I have just applied for my first Christmas fair.

modflowers: christmas in julySo here I sit in my kitchen, french doors open wide to the garden, the sun streaming in, a gentle breeze swaying the ten-foot-tall lovage plant in my herb bed and the lawn gently browning in the heat, with nearly thirty degrees on the thermometer.

I am loving the heatwave (mainly due to my not having to do anything strenuous in it – my heart goes out to those who have to toil at physical labour in this hot weather).

And what is it that I am working on, I hear you ask? Well, dolls wearing fur bonnets of course.

modflowers: christmas in julyI don’t know why it is that fur bonnets look cuter on my dolls than something more summery like floral headdresses, but they do.

Thankfully the kitchen is cool enough for working with scraps of furry stuff to not be too perspiration-inducing.

modflowers: christmas in julyI am still putting off getting out the holly and tinsel and other even more Christmassy stuff, hopefully until things turn at least a tad autumnal. There are limits, after all.

And I certainly won’t be tuning in to watch any of those Christmas movies any time soon. Not even to avoid the football. How about you?

As far as I’m concerned it’s bad enough that I have to even contemplate the prospect of Christmas in July. ♥

  1. She’s such a sweetie, and looks so cosy in her furry outfit.
I do understand your loathing of cold weather; I’ve completely lost my European anti-freeze and start shivering if the weather drops below 10°C. Which is rare round here, to be fair… On the other hand, warm weather is all very well, but there’s a downside when you’re hemming down the binding on a large quilt in 38°C!

    • I remember my mum knitting in summer and moaning about how it made her too hot! Thankfully my kitchen is nice and cool, but I can imagine the horror of wrestling with a large quilt when the temperature soars! I’d be rubbish in Australia, I seem to only be able to function properly within a really narrow temperature range at the moment!

  2. Quite like Christmas in July here in QLD. The novelty of cold days, a fire and wintery evening skyline makes me want to pretend it’s Christmas, only marginally less like Christmas than the real thing which is always too hot.

  3. I’m with you 100%. I told someone the other day the good thing about Hobby Lobby having their Christmas stuff out already is it keeps me out of the store! It’s too depressing!! And it’s all about the weather for me too!

    • I haven’t seen any Christmas stuff on sale in the shops yet, thankfully! It’s just that I am slow at making, so I have to start early to get enough made if I’m going to apply for any fairs at Christmas!

  4. They are currently halfway through Christmas in July on Sewing Quarter . . and this year they say they are not going to keep it going till Christmas like they did last year as that was a mistake . . it certainly was a huge mistake . . I love Christmas (and the cold . . really don’t do heat (anything above 22 degrees)) but even I was fed up after 6 months of bells jingling every morning and Christmas makes & fabrics in front of a decorated Christmas tree !
