Sometimes things don’t quite go as planned.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that, in my experience, most of the time things don’t go as planned.
I have just returned from a long weekend in Suffolk, staying with my partner, his siblings and family. We didn’t see them at Christmas as we were with my family in Australia, so this was a chance to swap presents and catch up.
I had in mind a spot of weekend sewing, and started not one, but three dolls to take with me. But alas, I left essential supplies behind, and was therefore completely stumped on the sewing front.
We stayed in Thorpeness in a house with a turret – at the prospect of which I was unreasonably excited…
The house was lovely. But from the inside, the turret was a disappointment. In fact, from indoors you wouldn’t even know it was a turret really.
But no matter.
We walked from the giant model village that is Thorpeness, along the beach to Aldeburgh…
Being nearly all vegetarians (one of whom harbours a dislike verging on the violent for anything fishy-smelling) we ignored the half-mile queue at the fish & chip shop, whose fare is fried in beef fat.
Instead we found veggie burgers and vegan hotdogs at Delphine’s, the cutest 1950s-style diner I’d ever seen…
We also found time to visit Southwold Pier, at which Tim Hunkin’s funny slot machines made nearly everyone happy, despite the icy sea breeze and the fog.
Getting to Dungeness, the sea-claimed sunken town about which my Dad used to have a bit of an obsession, turned out to be a longer drive than anticipated.
At the end of this drive was a very long, very shingly, very chilly strip of beach. And not a lot else.
But it did have a very friendly lady minding the mini museum. One of those little gems that I really liked (lady and museum).
It cheered me up no end, after standing on the beach wishing my Dad could be there with me.
I had been tipped off that there was a vintage emporium in Thorpeness, but I had not got my hopes up about it.
I have made the mistake before of planning to visit such places on family weekends away, only to find that my itinerary does not coincide with others’.
However, this time I was in luck…
And I found a couple of nice things to bring home…
That’s a bargainous and rather pretty tablecloth on top. And underneath is a useful embroidered workbag for my sewing.
So next time I go away somewhere, I can pack up my supplies in style.
I only hope I’ll be able to remember to actually bring them. ♥
Looks lovely, I went to Sidmouth, we had better weather, I think.
Whenever we go away, I never end up doing any of the projects I take, as we are too busy visiting places, walking on the beach with dog, cooking nice meals or I am visiting charity/ vintage shops.
The only thing I found was a Janome mini sewing machine, which I will take next time I go away as last time I took my heavy New Home!
Everything in antique/vintage shops was rather expensive!
Unfortunately, the BF doesnt feel the same way about ‘vintinquing’ as I do!
Yes, the weather was a bit sharp, particularly down in Southwold! My partner has learned over the years to put up with my “vintiquing”, but apart from old records I wouldn’t say he shares my passion. But then I loathe football, which seems to occupy most of his waking thought!
