Did anyone else have books illustrated by Aliki when they were little?
I remember getting her books from the local library with my dad, on the occasional Saturday mornings when he allowed me to accompany him.
I loved the illustrations so much…
Later, when I was almost a teenager, I found some vintage notelets at a jumble sale (I was an early rummaging adopter.)
Although their illustrations weren’t credited, I remember wondering at the time whether they were by Aliki, as they were certainly in her style.
I kept those notelets for years and never used them. I wonder what happened to them? (I still have that trouble when I put things away safely)
Aliki Liacouras was an American, born to Greek parents in 1929.
She studied art at Philadelphia Museum School of Art and went on to publish loads of illustrated children’s works, some of them written by her husband.
Her distinctive, naive comic book-style was often accompanied by well-researched scientific information on subjects including nature, fossils and dinosaurs, biographies, history and folklore, and childhood.
To be honest, I don’t really remember a lot about the subject matter.
Though I probably would have remembered one about a horse that liked sandwiches, had I come across it.
I just loved looking at the pictures.
Some things haven’t changed. ♥
I love these books – the illustrations are really wonderful. I don’t have any, but I’m certain that over the years I have seen them around and about on my charity shop travels
I have never heard of her, nor are they familiar to me… but aren’t they lovely! Gorgeous illustrations 🙂 I think you are right too, you would remember a story about a horse that liked sandwiches.
Gorgeous illustrations! I’ve never seen them before – thanks for sharing 🙂
