I did a bit of teaching last night.
I was asked along to a class run by my friend Ali, who teaches craft skills. She wanted me to talk to a group of her students about social media and setting up modflowers.
Like I’m some kind of expert! (a flattering idea, but not really true).
However, it actually went rather well, I think.
I used to give lots of workshops in my previous job (showing charities how to apply for lottery grants), but this was the first thing I had taught for a long while, and I really enjoyed it!
It was great to be able to share some of my skills.
Ali herself has some pretty amazing skills. As well as sewing, she makes gorgeous vintage fabric bespoke lampshades.
In return for my input, she has offered to either make me one, or to teach me how to make one.
A skill for a skill.
Now that’s the sort of teaching I like. ♥
Great idea. I would love to get help with my online profile, blog etc in exchange for any skills I have….
Those are lovely lampshades – and a skill swap is a great idea. I’d love to teach locally, may have to look into this when life settles down a bit.
Such beautiful lampshades.
Perhaps this could become another string to your bow – teaching workshops 🙂
Ooh what a lovely idea! It is always great to share skills! I am finding it so difficult to find out about setting up craft businesses! I have no idea where you start but nothing can beat someone sharing their first hand experience!
Swoony lampshades. I’d love to make a shade like that. What a great trade. I made a wonky crazy shade that drove me nearly to drink, but love these smooth professional looking beauties.
Oh you must learn … it is really enjoyable and not as difficult as you first think … Bee xx
That sounds wonderful! Maybe you could start running some sewing workshops yourself? Oh and I LOVE those lampshades!!
Just read your post on Wednesday’s teaching session. I really enjoyed it and was discussing with my fellow student – in the rain, at the bus stop – how shocked we were you had only been doing this for two years, you sounded like you’d been doing it for years. You gave us some great advice, it was really encouraging. Many thanks
You’re most welcome Jacqui! I’m glad you enjoyed it and that you found the session useful! Good luck with your future projects x
