When I was on holiday, I made a promise to myself.
This will be the year I learn to make clothes. Proper clothes. From proper patterns.
Rather than just altering and hacking about clothes that already exist.
My mum tried to teach me many years ago. I actually managed to complete a skirt, made from a vintage barkcloth curtain I had pulled out of a skip.
Way ahead of my time, me!
Anyway, I’ve done it. I’ve signed up for a class at local hive of crafty activity The Textile Workshop. I start next week!
I have plans…
They involve vintage sewing patterns…
I’ll let you know how I get on!
Judging by the patterns, it all looks very promising!
I have just been perusing the vintage patterns on offer on Etsy – none of those are actually mine – yet! 😉
Well done you! I used to make all my clothes as a teenager, but somehow lost the confidence, post-babies! I love these pattern – especially the white dress with the flowers on the front. Love the sound of barkcloth skirts too! Someone gave me a whole box (around 50) vintage patterns, maybe I shoud get them out and have a go too…… Enjoy your classes. xx
Oooh, do! I’d love to see some pictures of your vintage patterns! Its a whole new world of vintage browsing just opening up in front of me! 😉
Cant open the link… I so want to learn stitching! :/ goodluck 🙂
Hi sunofladies, if you mean the link to The Textile Workshop, it’s a local craft emporium in Sherwood, Nottingham. They have a website here: http://www.thetextileworkshop.co.uk/ but the classes are ones you actually go to, rather than online tutorials.
Oh alright! Thanks!
Come and join us in the Love What You Wear Project! http://thelovewhatyouwearproject.blogspot.co.uk About 30 of us have resolved to buy no new clothes for a year. There are some very experienced sewers in the group, and lots of less experienced, so we can share tips and help motivate each other. Morwhenna has even instigated a Tuesday evening sew along on Facebook!
Great idea! I’m not sure I could commit to buying no new clothes for a whole year though…
I’m learning too 🙂
I have signed up for an evening class at a college 30mins away from here. I’ve had my first lesson. 7 to go! My fabric is currently being prewashed.
We’ll have to compare notes!
Go for it, it’s easier than you think!
What a great plan … I really love the first pattern … the floral dresses are fab … can’t wait to see how you get on … Bee xx
