summer baggage

modflowers: handmade bag in Sarah Campbell's fabricsSo this is the result of my latest bit of bag making experimentation.

It’s the same basic pattern as I made before, but this time made in Sarah Campbell’s lovely Melodies fabrics.

I wasn’t certain whether these cotton fabrics would be sturdy enough, as I have previously used thicker “home dec” weight or canvas fabrics and I couldn’t find any suitable fusible wadding, nor any stiffer interfacing locally. So I had to improvise a bit.

But, although the resulting bag is soft rather than rigid, actually I don’t think it looks half bad for a first attempt.

modflowers: handmade bag in Sarah Campbell's fabricsI’ve sewn the strap directly onto the bag as I have run out of cover buttons, but it could equally have been made removable by the addition of a button and buttonhole to each side.

The nice thing about working with a co-ordinated fabric range is just that: all the colours co-ordinate, so everything tones together nicely.

So it doesn’t look like a dog’s dinner even using five different patterned fabrics including the lining…

modflowers: bag in Sarah Campbell's fabricsI tried out using one of those professional-looking magnetic snaps to fasten it, as I have temporarily run out of cover buttons.

I like the way it goes with my Liberty lawn frock, even though the dress colours aren’t remotely co-ordinated with the bag.

But if you ask me, summer isn’t a time for being too matchy-matchy in one’s attire…modflowers: bag in Sarah Campbell's fabricsAfter all, what’s summer for, if not to overdose on a riot of florals? ♥
