In case you don’t know what umbellifers are, they’re a family of plants with long stems and flowers forming clusters called umbels.
From frothy cow parsley to towering giant hogweed, I love ’em all. Both whilst they’re actually flowering and later, after they’ve gone to seed.
In fact I like seed heads of all types really. I have quite a few in vases: angelica, alliums, poppies and winter berries…
I’ve been wanting to do a picture based on my seedheads for a while.
And yesterday, when I finally got a few hours at the sewing machine, that’s what I did.
It started with a bit of patchwork, without any idea in my mind what I was going to do with it…
…and ended with something distinctly umbelliferous…
Perhaps it was the giant hogweed from Sunday’s walk that finally brought this picture to life.
Whatever it was, I don’t think it will be the last umbellifer I create.
You could say that a seed has been sown. ♥
Lovely… yes me too I’ve got a vase full of them in my jewellery workshop for inspiration!! Cx
They’re irresistible, aren’t they? When I saw the giant hogweed at the weekend I really wanted to chop some down and take them home, but they were on private property (and I didn’t have anything to cut through those enormous stalks with!)
I didn’t know the term, and I’m happy to learn it. I love moppy seedheads and your arrangement and sewn rendition are gorgeous!
Beautiful. I really love your patchwork creations.
